So, today, I made a good start on the problem of how to make my site viewable in Dutch, considering that my Dutch is far too poor and the cost and hassle of translating the entire site would be prohibitive.

After many hours of research, development and testing, I am fairly satisfied with my simple solution.

I have added two links to the module which appears on the left of every page and displays an image of a combined Dutch and Flemish flag. One link opens the site as a Google translation and the other as a BabelFish translation.

Of course, there is also the existing link to the page that explains why the site is mostly in English (written in Dutch, of course). This link is now from a line of text, reading “Over het gebruik van de Nederlands taal op deze web-site” (“About the use of the Dutch language on this site”).

This is far from a perfect solution, but it’s not bad, nonetheless.

Today, I finally finished the Web Design Wizard, written in VB.Net and therefore running on my Windows web-site, but appearing in a wrapper (essentially an iframe) in a page of my Joomla web-site, running on an Open Source server.

The Wizard has far more complicated logic built in to it than I could possibly have written in PHP, so I decided to go the VB.Net route, it being my true programming preference for complex work.

I also created a logo for the wizard made out of clip art, my Goaheadspace log and some generated text. There is now an insert on my front page, leading straight to the Wizard.

Hopefully, I’ll get some people trying it out.

I re-commenced working on the Web Design Wizard, today, after some days break (burn out!).

It’s coming along nicely, but still needs a certain amount of tweaking and debugging.

I also finally received the translation of a special Dutch page, which I had asked for from a friend, some time ago. So I published that, behind a Nederlands/Vlaams flag icon, on each page, as a module in the left column.
